MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of April 24, 2007 – April 30, 2007, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Six of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there has been a total of 422 DUI arrests, compared to a total of 372 during the same period last year, an increase of 13 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 728 major accidents so far this year, compared to a total of 843 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14 percent.

There have been 12 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with 13 for the same period last year, a decrease of 50 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
