MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of April 30-May 1, 2001, Big Island police arrested 15 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 266 DUI arrests, a 37 percent decrease from the 421 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 819 major accidents so far this year, compared to 748 during the same period last year, an increase of 9 percent.

There have been 11 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 10 during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
