During the week of May 16, 2011, through May 22, 2011, Big Island police arrested 32 motorists for drunk driving. Eleven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Five were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 582 DUI arrests compared with 613 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.1 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 533 major accidents so far this year compared with 551 during the same period last year, a decrease of of 3.3 percent.

So far this year, there were nine traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 12 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 25 percent.

To date, five fatalities this year were related to drugs only (2), alcohol only (1), or a combination of both (2 of the 9).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
