During the week of May 18, 2010, through May 23, 2010, Big Island police arrested 28 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 615 DUI arrests compared with 522 during the same period last year, an increase of 17.8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 537 major accidents so far this year compared with 653 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.8 percent.

So far this year, there were 13 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with seven during the same period last year, an increase of 85.7 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
