During the week of May 27, 2013, through June 2, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 21 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 555 DUI arrests compared with 610 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 584 major accidents so far this year compared with 635 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8 percent.

So far this year, there were 16 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 14 during the same period last year, an increase of 14.3 percent.

To date, four fatalities were related to drugs only (1), alcohol only (1), or a combination of both (2).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
