MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of May 30-June 5, 2006, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been a total of 499 DUI arrests, compared with a revised total of 407 during the same period last year, an increase of 23 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a revised total of 1,082 major accidents so far this year, compared with a revised total of 1,024 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.

There has been a total of 14 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 15 for the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
