During the week of June 7-14, 1999, Big Island police arrested 34 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 613 DUI arrests, a 41 percent increase over the 434 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 45 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 968, compared to 1,035 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.

There have been 10 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 18 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 44 percent.

There have been four recorded alcohol-related traffic fatalities so far this year, compared to nine at the same time last year, a decrease of 56 percent.
