MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of July10, 2007, through July 16, 2007, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 714 DUI arrests compared with 656 during the same period last year, an increase of 9 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,132 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,378 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18 percent.

So far this year, there have been 18 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 18 during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
