During the week of July 19-25, 1999, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 720 DUI arrests, a 31 percent increase over the 550 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 35 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,205, compared to 1,279 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.

There have been 16 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 22 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 27 percent.

Four of the fatalities have been alcohol-related, compared to 12 at the same time last year, a decrease of 67 percent. One of the alcohol-related fatalities this year was also drug-related.
