During the week of July 29, 2008, through August 4, 2008, Big Island police arrested 25 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Five were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 835 DUI arrests compared with 764 during the same period last year, an increase of 9 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,065 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,245 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14 percent.
So far this year, there have been 14 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 20 during the same period last year, a decrease of 30 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
