MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of August 8-August 14, 2006, Big Island police arrested 30 motorists for drunk driving. Eleven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and six were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been a total of 746 DUI arrests, compared with a revised total of 610 during the same period last year, an increase of 22 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a revised total of 1,582 major accidents so far this year, compared with a total of 1,489 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.

There has been a total of 21 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 21 for the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
