During the week of August 11, 2009, through August 17, 2009, Big Island police arrested 12 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
So far this year, there have been 852 DUI arrests compared with 881 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.3 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 983 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,136 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13.5 percent.
So far this year, there were 14 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 15 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.7 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
