MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of August 2-8, 1999, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 755 DUI arrests, a 22 percent increase over the 619 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 40 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,284, compared to 1,359 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.

There have been 16 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 24 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 33 percent.

Four of the fatalities this year have been alcohol-related, compared to 12 at the same time last year, a decrease of 67 percent. One of the alcohol-related fatalities this year was also drug-related.
