During the week of September 16, 2013, through September 22, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 35 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 940 DUI arrests compared with 1,024during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.2 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 985 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,074 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.3 percent.
So far this year, there were 21 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 30 during the same period last year, a decrease of 30 percent.
To date, 12 fatalities were related to drugs only (5), alcohol only (1), or a combination of both (6).
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
