During the period of December 28, 2009, through December 31, 2009, Big Island police arrested 15 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

In 2009, there were 1,395 DUI arrests compared with 1,397 (revised) during the previous year, an decrease of 0.1 percent. The numbers of arrests by district from December 28 through December 31 were:

There were 1,530 major accidents in 2009 compared with 1,749 (revised) during the same period the previous year, a decrease of 12.5 percent.

There were 22 traffic fatalities on the Big Island in 2007 compared with 27 during the same period the previous year, a decrease of 18.5 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
