Media Release (revised to reflect added fatality)

During the week of July 7, 2014, through July 13, 2014, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 12 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash.

So far this year, there have been 649 DUI arrests compared with 657 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.2 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 827 major accidents so far this year compared with 741 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.6 percent.

So far this year, there have been eight traffic fatalities [revised figure] on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 19 during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.9 percent [revised percentage].

To date, five fatalities were related to drugs (3), alcohol (0), or a combination of both (2).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
