MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police arrested and charged a 32-year-old man with escape Thursday (August 1, 2002) after he turned himself in to authorities at the Hawaii Community Correctional Facility in Hilo.

The escapee, identified as Floyd Chapman III, turned himself in Wednesday night to HCCC authorities hours after he had fled the Hale Nani Correctional Center.

HCCC authorities notified police Thursday morning and brought the escapee to the Hilo police station at 11:55 a.m. He was arrested and charged with escape, and he is currently being held at HCCC in lieu of $2,000 bail.

Chapman was reported missing Wednesday morning after guards at the Hale Nani facility conducted a headcount when they noticed he was absent.
