Fire damages Waiakea High School classrooms 08-20-02

A fire of unknown origin damaged several classrooms on the Waiakea High School campus early Tuesday (August 20, 2002).

Responding to a 3:27 a.m. call of a structure fire, Hilo police arrived to find a building engulfed in flames. It was later determined that the structure was Building R of the Waiakea High School campus, located at 155 West Kawili Street in Hilo.

Hawaii County firefighters also arrived at the scene and brought the fire under control after about 45 minutes.

Fire, smoke and water damages were confined to five classrooms in the building and a separate storage shed structure. There were no reported injuries resulting from the fire, and the amount of damages has yet to be determined.

Police and fire inspectors are continuing their investigations to determine what caused the fire.
