Florida man collapses, dies in waters off Kahaluu Beach 04-21-05

A 77-year-old visitor from Florida collapsed in waters off Kahaluu Beach Park and died Thursday (April 21, 2005).

The victim was identified as Herman Haupt, of Viera, Florida.

Responding to a 10:55 a.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that Haupt was standing in waist deep waters off Kahaluu Beach when he collapsed.

A county lifeguard brought him to shore and administered cardio-pulmonary resuscitation until fire rescue personnel arrived. The victim was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 2:30 p.m.

Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of the man’s death.
