MEDIA RELEASE

A nine-year-old girl was injured Friday (March 11, 2005) when she was struck by a vehicle on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 190) in front of the Waimea Elementary and Intermediate School.

The girl was taken to the North Hawaii Community Hospital, where she was treated for her injuries and later released.

Responding to a 2:33 p.m. call, South Kohala patrol officers determined that a 2000 Mazda pickup truck driven by a 57-year-old male was heading south on the highway when it struck the girl in the southbound lane as she was attempting to cross the road.

The girl was not in a marked crosswalk while crossing the road. A witness reported that she ran out between northbound vehicles that were stopped in traffic into the path of the pickup truck.

The driver of the truck was not injured, and speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the incident.
