A 27-year-old man died Friday morning (April 30, 1999) when he fell off a cliff while picking opihi below Paahau in the Hamakua District.

The victim was identified as Anthony Jeremy Ancheta, of a Paahau address.

Responding to an 11:43 a.m. call, Hamakua patrol officers learned that the victim was picking opihi below a 400-foot cliff. As he was climbing up the cliff on a rope, he fell off and onto the rocks below.

A fire rescue helicopter brought the body up the cliff, and the victim was driven to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m.

Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, and they have classified the death as a public accident.
