MEDIA RELEASE

A 52-year-old man was reported in critical condition Sunday evening (June 27, 1999) at the Hilo Medical Center after he was injured in an altercation over traffic.

Police arrested Larry Chung, 21, of a Hilo address, for assault and are holding him pending further investigation by Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives.

Police and fire rescue personnel responded to a 5:59 p.m. call that a victim of an assault was lying on the ground and not breathing at Carlsmith Park in Keaukaha. Fire personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation to the victim and transported him to the hospital.

Witnesses said the victim’s vehicle was blocking traffic near the restroom area of the park when the suspect got angry, and he and the victim got out of their vehicles. They said the suspect slapped the victim on top of head, then struck him in the face, knocking him on the ground, and left the scene.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Glenn Uehana of the Hilo CIS at 961-2386. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. Crime Stoppers information is kept strictly confidential.
