…charged with attempted murder
Media Release
Big Island police have charged a 29-year-old Hilo man with attempted second-degree murder stemming from an incident in the parking lot of a business on Kalanianaole Street early Wednesday evening (April 23).
South Hilo patrol officers responded to the scene, located near "Ice Pond," after receiving a report of a man being run over by a vehicle. Responding officers learned that the driver had evidently intentionally struck the 23-year-old Hilo man, who had obvious, significant injuries to his waist and both legs.
The suspect, Anousack Hamilton, was still at the scene when the officers arrived. Police took him into custody without incident.
The victim sustained numerous pelvic fractures and multiple fractures in both legs. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center and later flown to The Queens Medical Center on Oahu via air ambulance. He is listed in stable condition.
The victim and suspect were acquaintances and had been involved in an argument prior to the event.
Criminal Investigation Section detectives continued the investigation and later Wednesday night charged Hamilton with the offense. He is being held at the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $100,000 bail pending his initial court appearance scheduled for this afternoon (April 24) in South Hilo District Court.
Police ask anyone who may have witnessed this incident to call Detective Reed Mahuna at 961-2384.
