A 61-year old Hilo woman died Wednesday (July 10) from injuries she received in a motor vehicle/pedestrian collision the night before at the intersection of Kamehameha Avenue and Kalakaua Street in downtown Hilo.

Responding to an 8:59 p.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined that the woman was crossing Kamehameha Avenue just south of Kalakaua Street from the mauka to makai direction when she was struck by a 1998 Honda four-door sedan traveling south on Kamehameha Avenue and being operated by a 35-year-old Hilo woman.

The woman was not in a marked crosswalk.

Fire Rescue personnel took her to Hilo Medical Center, where she died at 3:55 a.m. Wednesday.

The driver of the vehicle and her passengers were not injured.

Police do not believe that speed, alcohol or drugs were involved.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Officer Tuckloy Aurello at 961-8119.
