Big Island vice officers arrested 23 people early Sunday (May 2, 1999) in a raid on a gambling game in Hilo’s Keaukaha area.

Acting on a search warrant at 1:55 a.m., the officers raided a Todd Avenue residence and arrested the suspects on one count each of promoting gambling and conspiracy to promote gambling. All were released pending further investigation.

Police also confiscated more than $14,000 in cash and have begun forfeiture proceedings against the money.

Arrested in the raid were Taras Mahoe, 29, of Hilo; Vernon Montibon, 32, of Hilo; Robert Lee, 54, of Kurtistown; David Colon, 42, of Captain Cook; Faye Kuheana, 48, of Hilo; Daniel Bohol, 46, of Hilo; Tina Mochida, 43, of Hilo; Gwen Kaaua, 51, of Hilo; James Kaaua, 55, of Hilo; Samson Wana, 55, of Hilo; Johnson Keliipio, 47, of Hilo; Valerie Ferreira, 41, of Hawaiian Paradise Park; Ponsan Suwanasan, 32, of Hilo; Kiyoshi Miyashiro, 72, of Hilo; Sonny Hoopai, 49, of Hilo; Linda Kepaa, 49, of Hilo; Nobuwo Iwamoto, 70, of Hilo; Gary Casem, 38, of Hilo; Darrel de Silva, 50, of no permanent address; Victor Chun Fat, 67, of Papaikou; William Chong, 70, of Hilo; Aaron Jitchaku, 41, of Hilo; and Roy Atiz, 48, of Papaikou.
