Police arrested and charged a 31-year-old Hilo man with robbery after store employees chased and tackled him in the parking lot outside Macy’s on Wednesday (March 20, 2002).

The suspect, Jesus S. Perez, was charged with robbery, second-degree theft, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held overnight in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $5,050 bail.

Responding to a 5:35 p.m. call of a theft in progress at Macy’s in Prince Kuhio Plaza, officers learned that the suspect had concealed several articles of men’s clothing, valued at more than $500, in his backpack and left the store without paying for them.

Three store employees ran after the suspect into the parking lot. One of the employees was elbowed in the jaw as he tried to grab the backpack. The other two employees tackled the suspect to the ground. One of employees skinned his forehead and the other skinned his right elbow. All involved declined medical attention.
