MEDIA RELEASE

Hilo police arrested a 19-year-old Papaikou male for robbery Friday (April 2, 1999) after he was caught shoplifting at the JC Penney store in the Prince Kuhio Mall.

Jacob Lareau was charged with second-degree robbery. He was also arrested and charged with contempt of court and unsworn falsification after he provided police with false identification. He is being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $5,700.

Responding to a 12:55 call Friday, Hilo patrol officers learned that a security guard saw Lareau shoplifting clothing at the department store. After the suspect left the store without paying for the merchandise, he was confronted by the guard and tried to escape. The guard chased him, and when he tried to detain the suspect, the suspect struck him in the face.

The guard sustained minor injuries, but required no medical treatment.
