MEDIA RELEASE

Police arrested a 35-year-old suspect Thursday (May 13, 1999) for robbery after he allegedly robbed a 55-year-old man at James Kealoha Beach Park in Hilo’s Keaukaha area.

Acting on a description of the suspect at about 7:30 p.m., Puna patrol officers arrested Curtis Kaimana Uwekoolani in Mountain View. Uwekoolani, of a Mountain View address, is being held in the Hilo police cellblock pending further investigation.

Responding to a 4:55 p.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers learned that the victim was sitting in his car near the restroom area of the park when a man came from behind and punched him several times in the left side of his face. The suspect reached into the car and grabbed the car keys. Threatening to kill the victim, the assailant demanded money.

After a bystander recovered the car keys and gave them back to the victim, the assailant left the scene in a Chevrolet van.

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives are continuing the robbery investigation.
