The Hawaii Police Department is investigating a robbery reported early Tuesday morning (September 2) in Hilo.

At about 1:30 a.m., south Hilo patrol officers responded to Hilo Medical Center to a report of a man having been assaulted by another man at Kalakaua Park in downtown Hilo.

Sometime between 11:30 p.m. and midnight Monday (September 1), an unidentified man approached the victim and requested a cigarette. He then struck the victim on the head with what is being described as a baseball bat. The suspect stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the victim and fled on foot.

The suspect is described as a local male in his 20s, approximately 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-7, about 220 pounds with short hair.

The victim was treated for his injuries and later released.

Police ask anyone with information about the case or anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.
