MEDIA RELEASE

A 40-year-old Honomu man is being held in the Hilo police cellblock on $10,000 bail after he allegedly shot a two-prong spear at his girlfriend Friday night (May 12, 2000) and spread gasoline inside his duplex apartment.

The suspect, Phillip Nihau, was charged at noon Saturday with one count of first-degree terroristic threatening and nine counts of first-degree reckless endangering.

Responding to a 10:31 p.m. call Friday, police determined that during an argument with his girlfriend at the Honomu duplex, Nihau shot a spear at her and then spread gasoline throughout the residence, endangering nine occupants in his residence and the adjoining duplex apartment. Four of the occupants were minors ranging in age from 10 months to 5 years who were sleeping in the adjoining duplex apartment.

No one was injured in the incident.

Nihau was arrested at the scene on outstanding bench warrants Friday night and arrested and charged the next day with terroristic threatening and reckless endangering.
