A 48-year-old Hawaiian Ocean View Estates man was arrested and charged with several offenses following an incident in which a firearm was discharged on Makaʻala Street in Hilo.

About 12:46 a.m. Thursday (December 13), police responded to a call that a firearm had been discharged in the Hilo Industrial Area. Officers contacted witnesses and located a vehicle parked on Makaʻala Street.

Police linked the vehicle to Allen Benjamin III. He was taken into custody while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section conducted further investigation.

No one was injured as a result of the firearm being discharged. Detectives recovered ammunition and a firearm.

At 9 p.m. Thursday, after conferring with the prosecutor’s office, detectives charged Benjamin with second-degree reckless endangering, place to keep ammunition, place to keep pistol, first-degree theft, and two counts of ownership/possession prohibited. His bail was set at $15,000.

He was scheduled to make his initial court appearance Friday afternoon (December 14).
