MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Ka’u patrol officers Tuesday (October 1, 2002) arrested a 21-year-old suspect wanted for the reported kidnapping and assault of a 59-year-old female.

At 11:20 a.m., police arrested Derek S.K. Fontes, at a location in Pahala, Ka’u, on two outstanding bench warrants as well as for a number of charges stemming from the assault, which occurred Sunday evening.

Fontes was also charged with kidnapping, assault, terroristic threatening, violation of a court order, three firearms violations and promoting a detrimental drug.

The female victim told police that about 7 p.m. Sunday, Fontes tied her up, threatened her and struck her in the head with a rifle.

After being charged Tuesday, Fontes was to be transported to the Kona police cellblock, where he was to be held without bail.
