A North Kohala teenager shot himself in the right foot Monday (September 6, 1999) while hunting in the Alaalae area near Hawi in North Kohala.

The 15-year-old victim was hunting with three friends about 6:30 p.m. when he shot himself after tripping over a rock, causing him to accidentally pull the trigger and fire the .22-caliber rifle he was carrying.

The victim was carried out of the hunting area by his companions, 16-, 17- and 19-year-old North Kohala males, and then taken to the North Kohala Hospital, where he was treated and later released.
