Police have identified a 44-year-old man who drowned in waters off Kailua-Kona pier Sunday (June 23, 2002).

The victim was identified as Yasuji Yoshimura of Tokyo, Japan.

The results of an autopsy disclosed that Yoshimura died as the result of salt water drowning.

An investigation revealed that the victim had participated in five-kilometer run in Kailua-Kona the day before he drowned. Yoshimura had been seen snorkeling in waters off the pier before he drowned.

The victim’s name had been withheld until his next of kin could be notified.
