A 77-year-old woman died Tuesday (July 31) after being involved in a one-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of Lako Street and Hualalai Road.

Responding to a 7:42 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 2000 Honda multi-purpose vehicle traveling east on Lako Street when she went through the intersection of Hualalai Road and struck a rock wall. The driver was transported to by Fire Rescue personnel to Kona Community Hospital, where she died at 8:25 p.m.

Police do not believe that speed or alcohol were involved. The victim was wearing her seatbelt.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Police believe that the driver may have suffered from a medical condition prior to the crash.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. Police are going to wait for the autopsy results to see if the victim died from a medical condition or injuries from the crash.
