MEDIA RELEASE

A 33-year-old man died of injuries he suffered Wednesday (September 22, 2004) when his motor scooter collided with a parked car on Alii Drive fronting Kahaluu Beach Park in Keauhou, North Kona.

Responding to a 10:42 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the victim, identified as Charles T. Lefko, of a Kailua-Kona address, was traveling south on Alii Drive when he lost control of his 1986 Honda Scooter, which crossed the centerline and struck a parked Cadillac two-door sedan on the east side of the road.

Lefko was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have not determined if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death. The Traffic Enforcement Unit is conducting a coroner’s inquest investigation into the collision, and anyone with information about the traffic accident should call Officer Bradley Freitas of the TEU at 961-2332.

Wednesday’s death was the 30th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 22 for the same period last year.
