Big Island police are investigating a robbery Saturday [corrected day] night (May 22) in Kailua-Kona.

A 67-year-old Kailua-Kona woman was walking north on Kuakini High shortly before 7:45 p.m. when a man approached her from behind and pulled her purse off her arm and then fled on foot in a westerly direction toward downtown Kailua-Kona. The victim suffered pain to her right arm and hand.

The victim and three male bystanders chased after the suspect but were unable to reach him.

The suspect is described as a local male in his early 20s, about 5-foot-6 and 200 pounds. He was wearing dark long pants with cuffs, a long-sleeved shirt and a knitted cap.

The Area II Criminal Investigations Section will continue the investigation.
