MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island Police are reminding Hilo motorists that traffic traveling in both the makai and mauka directions will be prohibited from making left turns from Ponahawai Street onto Kapiolani Street between 4 and 6 p.m. on weekdays.

Turns will be allowed on weekends, however.

Acting Lieutenant Randy Apele of the Traffic Services Section said the change was implemented following a review conducted by Police and Public Works personnel and is intended to reduce the traffic buildup on Ponahawai Street during peak traffic hours caused by left turns.

Apele urged motorists to exercise patience and drive with extra caution, for traffic in the Hilo area will be heavier and slower than normal until Komohana Street is reopened.
