MEDIA RELEASE

A male driver was killed early Thursday (June 28, 2001) in a single-vehicle accident on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 11) in South Kona.

Police identified the victim as Jeffrey Mullineaux, 39, of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates in Ka’u.

Responding to a 12:44 a.m. call, police determined that the Mullineaux, the lone occupant, was thrown from a Jeep Cherokee after it struck an embankment and overturned near the 82-mile marker in Honomalino.

He was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:13 a.m.

Police said speed and alcohol may have been factors in the traffic accident.

Thursday’s death was the 15th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 19 at the same time last year.
