MEDIA RELEASE

A 57-year-old Puna man apparently drowned Tuesday (July 4, 2000) when he fell off a cliff into waters off Hawaiian Paradise Park in Puna.

Responding to a 8:53 p.m. call, police and fire units learned that the victim, an Ainaloa resident whose name is being withheld until notification of next of kin, was fishing with a friend when he walked toward the cliff and fell into the water below.

At 9 p.m., a fire rescue helicopter recovered the body of the victim, who was flown to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have classified the case as a coroner’s inquest and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
