Big Island vice officers confiscated 8,119 marijuana plants ranging in height from seedlings to 10 feet during a five-day operation that ended Friday (September 28, 2001).

Big Island vice officers were joined in the operation by personnel from the Hawaii National Guard and State Department of Land and Natural Resources.

This week’s marijuana sweep — which covered areas of Hamakua, North Hilo, South Hilo, Puna and the Volcano — was part of the department’s continuing “Counter-Cannabis Field Operation.”

The operation concentrated on the areas of Stainback Highway and Amauulu in South Hilo; Umauma and Mauulua in North Hilo. Kapehu and Paauilo in North Hilo; Keaau, Glenwood, Tiki Garden, Royal Garden, Opihikao, Kalapana, Orchidland, Pohoiki, Hawaiian Acres and Makuu in Puna; and the Volcano area.

Officers reported finding no booby traps or other incidents during the eradication operation.
