MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Searchers found a missing 80-year-old hiker Sunday (April 9, 2000) who was reported missing the previous morning on a hike in the Koaia area of South Kohala.

A county helicopter found the hiker, Jerry Brotherton, of Kailua, Oahu, about 2:30 p.m. near the Puu O Umi trail and took him to the North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was reported in stable condition. Brotherton was to be held overnight for observation.

Brotherton was reported missing Saturday after he got separated from other members of a hiking party about 11 a.m. on the Puu O Umi trail off the Kohala Mountain Road (Route 250).

Police and fire personnel conducted a ground and air search Saturday but failed to find the missing hiker. The search was suspended Saturday night because of bad weather.
