Big Island police have initiated a coroner’s inquest case in connection with a Kona man who disappeared while picking opihi in Ka’u on Saturday (June 28).
Nathan Labarios, 58, of Kainaliu was reported missing at 4:45 p.m. Saturday by friends he was camping with at Kamilo Point, about five miles from South Point. They reported they had last seen him around 11 a.m. before he left to pick opihi alone.
Fire Department personnel searched the area Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday (June 29) divers recovered shorts, an opihi bag and human remains with what appeared to be shark bite marks.
Police have not positively linked the human remains to the missing man. An autopsy is scheduled.
