MEDIA RELEASE

A 57-year-old man died Thursday (November 2, 2000) after his pickup truck struck an embankment and flipped over on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 19) in the Ookala area of North Hilo.

The victim was identified as Avelino Quevedo, of Papaikou address.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Quevedo was driving his 1990 Ford Ranger east toward Hilo when the truck ran off the right shoulder of the road near the 31-mile marker, struck an embankment and overturned, landing upside down.

The victim, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was partially ejected from the vehicle.

Quevedo was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:55 a.m. He was later transported to the Hilo Medical center.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are continuing the investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Quevedo’s death was the 32nd traffic fatality of the year on the Big Island, compared to 26 at the same time last year.
