MEDIA RELEASE

North Kohala police are reminding motorists that because of the Ironman Triathlon, the Akoni Pule Highway (Route 270) will be closed to traffic between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday (October 23, 1999).

Only restricted traffic by local residents will be allowed in certain areas along the highway. Motorists who must use the makai highway between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. should expect long delays, police said.

Motorists outside the district who plan to travel to and from North Kohala are urged to plan their travel before 8 a.m. or after 3 p.m. If that isn’t possible, they should use the Kohala Mountain Road (Route 250), police said.

Police also advise motorists immediately west of Hawi who are unable to avoid the highway and who want to get to the east side of the town to use the Hoea-Pratt-Hawi Road bypass.
