A Papaikou man was killed in a traffic crash that occurred Saturday (September 27, 2003) at the intersection of Old Mill Road and Hawaii Belt Road (Route 19).

The victim was identified as Randy Hayashi, 39.

Responding to a 3:01 p.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined that a 1998 Chevrolet four-door sedan driven by Hayashi was traveling east on Old Mill Road. When the sedan tried to cross the intersection, it was struck by a 1992 Jeep truck headed north on Hawaii Belt Road.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are continuing an investigation into the collision and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police are also asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has information about it to call Officer Reed K. Mahuna of the Traffic Enforcement Unit at 961-2332 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
