A male pedestrian was killed Tuesday (September 9, 2003) when he was struck by a van on Queen Kaahumanu Highway (Route 19) about seven-tenths of a mile north of the Hualalai Resort in Kaupulehu, North Kona.

The victim could not be immediately identified.

Responding to a 6:51 p.m. call, Kona Patrol officers determined that a rented 2003 Chevrolet van driven south by William Carr, of Visalia, California, struck the pedestrian in the southbound lane.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are conducting an investigation into the traffic death.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Officer Bradley Freitas of the TEU in Kona at 326-4277, Sergeant Leroy Victorino of the TEU in Hilo at 961-2332 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Tuesday’s death was the 22nd traffic fatality so far this year on the Big Island, compared to 18 at the same time last year.
