The body of a man believed to have been killed by a gunshot wound was found Thursday evening (January 31, 2001) in the Pepeekeo area South Hilo.

South Hilo police responded to a 5:17 p.m. report from a passerby that the body of a man was lying on the shoulder of the roadway of the old Hilo Coast Processing Plant road. Upon arrival, officers found the body of a local male who had died of a suspected gunshot wound.

The identity of the victim could not be immediately established, and Hilo Criminal Investigation detectives are continuing a murder investigation.

The victim was described as a local male, about 5-feet-8 in height, weighing about 150 pounds, wearing no shirt and wearing a black Quicksilver shorts with green trim and Nike shoes. The victim had a tattoo of a cross on his left shoulder, and a Chinese character on his left shoulder blade.
