MEDIA RELEASE

Police are asking for the public’s help in solving a truck fire maliciously set in July 2001.

The truck, leased to the Metcalf Construction Company, was found burning shortly after 8 p.m. on July 12, 2001, at the corner of Kanoelehua Avenue and Puainako Street.

The vehicle was a white 1989 Ford F-350 flatbed truck. Damaged were the cab and equipment in the back of the truck.

Police believe the truck fire may have been related to an earlier one set maliciously earlier in the Day. At 10:45 a.m., a fire was set at the company’s field office, located off Railroad Avenue near the Pau O Palae Street intersection, and a piece of equipment there.

Anyone with information about either fire is asked to call Detective Grace Castillo of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2388 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
