MEDIA RELEASE

Police are seeking the public’s help in solving a burglary committed last month at the Kealakekua Pharmacy in Kona.

About 2:43 a.m. on April 8, 2002, a thief or thieves broke into the pharmacy, located in the Mango Court complex in Kainaliu, by smashing a sliding glass door.

Witnesses said they saw an unidentified male suspect wearing a light-colored sweater with a hood over his head leave the pharmacy and quickly disappear. The suspect was described only as being about 6 feet in height and having a slim build.

Shortly before, they also saw a large white or tan sedan with its headlights turned off leave the front parking lot, travel north on Mamalahoa Highway and then make a U-turn and head south on the highway.

Police said unknown items, possibly bottles of a painkiller, were taken from a locked metal cabinet in the pharmacy.

Anyone with information about the burglary or the identities of the suspect or the owner of the sedan is asked to call Officer Belinda Kahiwa at 326-4646 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property.
